issues in creative research design

issues in creative research design
notes from a thought provoking graduate research workshop
01.09.2010
dr inger mewburn
dr adel varcoe

the broad issues raised were with situating the research, audience, types of exegesis, types of knowledge:

number of models for the exegesis:

- the ‘big book’ - sustained argument over intro, 7-8 chapters & conclusion
- bunch of papers – intro, collected papers & conclusion
- through creative works - as text that embodies the work. text forms part of the research…not necessarily descriptive or interpretive.

what form (and role) might the text take on example given was magazine format of dr adelel varcoe. a useful strategy for her was to assume a news caster persona, who could then interview adel varcoe from a third position.

asked some questions around knowledge:
who are the others?
what can they learn?

this effectively opened up a discussion around audience:

who is interested and what do they need to understand the phd?

the initial response is that the audience sits within certain sections of the academy, practice and profession

there will obviously be a great deal of assumed prior knowledge within audience. it is hoped the thesis will be able to engage a layperson, an undergraduate or an expert in their field. (at times the expert may find themselves the layperson and at times the layperson the expert eg retail, film, media etc)

the problem of the problem:
pure problems
applied problems
also other research types:
exploratory research
testing out research
problem solving research
creative problem solving research
creative production projects
more…?
research problem statement:
creative problem mode (do):
domain of interest (i will explore):
main issues/concerns
